Ritushree, a 25-year-old polytechnic student from Guwahati, breaks down before completing her sentence. “I have never met him but he has been part of my daily life since childhood,” she tells reporters at Kamarkuchi, where Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg was cremated after drowning off Singapore’s coast on September 19, 2025.

Like hundreds of admirers streaming from villages across Assam, Ritushree came to pay respects at what has become a pilgrimage site for grieving fans. But her tears carry more than grief—they carry fury directed squarely at Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his BJP government.

“We trusted the CM,” says Ritushree, who voted BJP in recent Lok Sabha elections. “But that trust has eroded.”

One month after Garg’s death, what began as mourning has exploded into Assam’s most powerful protest movement since the Citizenship Amendment Act demonstrations. The hashtag #usticeForZubeenGarg has crossed 2 million social media mentions, making it one of Northeast India’s biggest digital campaigns ever.

From Grief to Political Uprising

Singapore police ruled out foul play in Garg’s drowning but conspiracy theories have taken deep root among Assam’s 35 million residents. Suspicions intensified after allegations emerged that event organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta had connections to Sarma’s family.

Mahanta is among seven people arrested including Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma, his cousin and suspended police officer Sandipan Garg and two personal security officers. All remain in judicial custody as Assam’s Special Investigation Team probes the case.

But public anger isn’t just about investigation delays—it’s about broken trust.

During an October 12 Facebook livestream, CM Sarma promised voters subsidized cooking gas, pulses, sugar and mustard oil if BJP wins 2026 Assembly elections. For protesters demanding justice, this felt like calculated distraction.

“He is talking about beneficiary schemes and mustard oil prices,” Ritushree says angrily. “But we don’t need all this—we need justice.”

Violence Erupts, Social Media Explodes

On October 15, chaos engulfed Baksa district when angry crowds pelted stones at vehicles transporting the five arrested accused to a newly constructed jail facility. Over 30 people—protesters, police personnel and journalists—suffered injuries in violent clashes.

Two people sustained bullet wounds and were rushed to Guwahati hospitals. Police resorted to lathi-charges and tear gas to control thousands of Garg’s fans who attempted storming the jail premises.

The district administration imposed Section 163 prohibitory orders and declared a total internet shutdown across Baksa to prevent further unrest.

Protesters alleged the government was protecting accused individuals by transferring them to a luxurious new facility instead of regular jails. “The government is trying to cover up the matter,” claimed Phatik Chandra Borah, a 55-year-old farmer who traveled 110 kilometers from Darrang district with 70 villagers who pooled Rs 280 each to hire a bus to Kamarkuchi.

“If the government does not sense this anger in time, it will learn its lesson in upcoming elections,” Borah warned.

Digital Movement Becomes Mass Uprising

The online campaign demanding justice has shattered all records for Assam-based social movements. Actress Amrita Gogoi launched the digital protest, urging everyone to simultaneously post #We_Need_ZubeenGargJustice_within_10days and #JusticeForZuenGarg on October 13 at 10 AM.

Within hours, the hashtags went viral. When Garg’s wife Garima Saikia Garg joined the campaign, her single Facebook post generated over 50,000 likes, 38,000 comments and 9,000 shares—turning the appeal into a digital phenomenon.

Prominent figures including Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi, Congress Assam president Gaurav Gogoi and numerous artists amplified the message. The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) announced statewide protests, including pasting 10 lakh stickers on vehicles and organizing candlelight vigils.

An online petition demanding transparent investigation has collected over 380,000 signatures.

Himanta Sarma Strikes Back

Sensing the political earthquake beneath his feet, CM Sarma made a controversial claim on October 21: “If I resign today, 50% of the protests will end immediately. And if Gaurav Gogoi is made Chief Minister, the remaining 50% will also stop.”

Sarma alleged protests had deviated from their original purpose and were being “hijacked by political interests” ahead of 2026 elections. “The purpose of this protest is not about ensuring justice for Zubeen,” he claimed.

He drew a distinction between “true fans” who loved Garg during his lifetime and those who “once criticized him but now claim to fight for him” after deleting previous social media posts.

Opposition leader Debabrata Saikia fired back, accusing Sarma of controlling the investigation and creating confusion. “From his statements, it appears the ongoing investigation may not be entirely transparent,” Saikia said, questioning why CM Vigilance officers were assigned to CID instead of regular investigators.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited Guwahati to meet Garg’s family, urging swift conclusion of the probe.

BJP’s Damage Control Strategy

Recognizing the political threat, BJP Assam announced its own campaign demanding “fast-tracking of the investigation”. Between October 22-30, each BJP district office will host “mass people’s rallies,” while party MLAs promised installing Garg’s statues in their constituencies.

“We have to stay with the sentiment and emotion of the public,” a BJP spokesperson explained, defending why they would protest their own government.

The party unveiled a statewide campaign titled “Moiu Zubeen, Amiu Zubeen” (I am also Zubeen, We are also Zubeen) to celebrate the singer’s legacy while demanding faster justice.

Plans include establishing music schools named after Garg and Bhupen Hazarika in BJP-held constituencies and planting Nahor saplings—Garg’s favorite tree.

The state cabinet decided requesting the Gauhati High Court to establish a fast-track court for expedited trial.

Deeper Issues Fuel Public Anger

Political observers note the Zubeen protests tap into broader grievances against Sarma’s government that remained unspoken until now.

“People are really angry with the government,” says Surajit Roy, a 36-year-old Guwahati driver. “It’s the first time in five years that Himanta has been nervous.”

·       Multiple challenges threaten BJP’s Assam dominance ahead of 2026 elections,

o   ST Status Protests: Over 200,000 tea workers and Adivasis recently protested in Dibrugarh demanding Scheduled Tribe status, daily wage hikes to Rs 551 and land rights. Six communities—Tai Ahoms, Morans, Mottocks, Chutias, Koch-Rajbongshis and Tea Tribes—have intensified agitation for constitutional recognition.

o   Internal BJP Defections: Four-time MP Rajen Gohain quit BJP in October along with 17 other leaders, exposing tensions between old guard and new leadership. Hundreds of former BJP workers have joined Congress, expressing dissatisfaction with Sarma’s leadership.

o   Electoral Setback: BJP suffered its first major defeat in September’s Bodoland Territorial Council elections where Hagrama Mohilary’s Bodoland People’s Front won 28 of 40 seats—BJP managed just 5.

o   Anti-Incumbency Factors: Political commentator Apurba Kumar Baruah points to “land alienation, indiscriminate evacuation in tribal areas, unfulfilled ST status promises and mainstreaming of corruption” as key grievances.

CAA Comparison and Unity Message

Observers compare current unrest to 2019-20 Citizenship Amendment Act protests—the last time Sarma faced such public anger.

“This challenge is greater than CAA as it cuts across all sections of population,” says Chandan Kumar Sharma, sociology professor at Tezpur University.

Social scientist Hiren Gohain adds: “Himanta thought he had climbed to an unassailable position, but now the battlements of his fortress seem to have collapsed.”

Crucially, Garg’s death has united people across religious and caste lines—directly challenging Sarma’s polarization politics. A young Brahmin man was filmed tearing his sacred thread at Garg’s memorial, announcing he would “live only as a human”—a powerful rejection of divisive identity politics.

·       Journalist Sushanta Talukdar explains: “Zubeen Garg’s death has united people against all kinds of communal hatred and divisive politics, an ideal pursued by Garg through his songs. In contrast, Sarma’s core electoral strategy has remained centered around polarization and otherization of Muslims.”

Can Sarma Survive This Storm.?

Despite the unprecedented challenge, some analysts believe BJP may weather this crisis.

“While it is a challenge—a very strong one—BJP will manage to navigate this in the longer run,” says Nayan Moni Kumar, political science lecturer at Ajmal Law College.

·       Professor Sharma agrees: “The uproar is a manifestation of disgruntlement against the government. However, whether this will reflect in electoral results is difficult to predict yet. The Opposition’s house is still not in order.”

·       Taxi driver Roy warns of one scenario that could tip Assam into “volatile territory”: “If Garima Saikia takes to the streets, nobody can stop the people of Assam then.”

·       As investigation continues and 2026 elections approach, the question remains: Has Zubeen Garg’s death created the political earthquake that will finally shake Himanta Biswa Sarma’s seemingly unshakeable grip on Assam.?

The answer may determine not just the state’s political future but whether welfare schemes and development promises can overcome deep-seated demands for justice, identity and truth.
